MISSION

The Pacific Marine Mammal Center Rescues, Rehabilitates And Releases Marine Mammals And Inspires Ocean Stewardship Through Research, Education And Collaboration.

Pacific Marine Mammal Center was the first marine mammal rehabilitation facility in California, established prior to the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972.  We now share the responsibility for marine mammal rehabilitation with six other centers along the California’s coastline. PMMC is very proud to be a leader in the field.

The Center was founded by Jim Stauffer, John Cunningham, and Dr. Rose Ekeberg in 1971. Jim was a lifeguard committed to saving both people and marine mammals, and in the spring of 1971, a little girl approached him and told him that she had seen a seal on the beach. What he found was a young Pacific harbor seal that he nursed back to health and released back into the ocean. Word spread, and within a few weeks, John Cunningham, another lifeguard, began helping. John, a teacher during the school year, developed a marine science class in 1972, which required students to volunteer at the new Center. Dr. Rose Ekeberg of Laguna Canyon Animal Hospital provided medicine and medical advice and housed some of the animals at her clinic.

Over the decades, PMMC has rescued approximately 8,000 marine mammals through its high-quality rehabilitation services that are largely volunteer run. We remain the only marine mammal rehabilitation facility in Orange County, California, licensed to rescue, rehabilitate, and release marine mammals that strand on local beaches. This work also leads to the marine mammal research in collaboration with other conservation organizations and academic universities.  In addition, the Center reaches 10,000 children annually through its experiential-based education programs, most of which are provided free to at-risk communities. Building on past success and current momentum, we look ahead to the future as we explore ways to act more broadly on their mission.

PMMC has $10 million in assets and operates with an annual budget of $2.5 million, of which approximately $2 million is fundraising revenue. Having recently launched a $7.5 million capital campaign, PMMC is ready to respond to the growing need for marine mammal rescues and public education in the face of the changing environment. PMMC’s proposed facility and program expansion offers the opportunity for greater service to its animal clients, human visitors and learners, and leadership in the marine mammal and ocean conversancy sectors.

With this in mind, the Board of Directors hired a new visionary CEO, Peter Chang, two years ago. Chang, MA Public Health, MBA, is a visionary, experienced nonprofit and business leader. He has been charged with working with the Board of Directors and staff to charter a new course by evaluating the organizational structure and strengths and implementing best practices for transformative change, including expansion of its facilities, educational programming, and innovative research. One of his top priorities is to strengthen PMMC’s resources by establishing a broader and more diversified fund development program with an emphasis on individual giving.

The Chief Executive Officer and Vice President of Development are seeking a fund development leader who knows the Orange County philanthropic landscape, possesses intellectual horsepower and is naturally persuasive and fair, valuing accountability and a team approach.

 

Job Summary

We are recruiting an Individual Giving Manager to be responsible for cultivating, developing, and overseeing relationships with existing donors and new prospects, focusing on securing gifts of $1,000+ from individuals in support of Pacific Marine Mammal Center’s strategic objectives.

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced donor relationship manager to take their resource development experience to the next level while working and learning closely with a Development team including the Vice President of Development and CEO.

This position will be assigned a portfolio of prospects and have dual functions:

  1. Moves Management: Work with the Vice President of Development and other Pacific Marine Mammal Center staff members to steward existing low-to-mid level donors and cultivate them for major gifts in support of PMMC priorities.
  2. Donor Pipeline: Work with the Vice President of Development, other Pacific Marine Mammal Center staff members and volunteers to build through research our donor pipeline. The goal will be to identify, qualify, cultivate and solicit prospective donors. This portion of the position will focus on a significant volume of proactive outreach to secure face-to-face qualification visits, and ultimately solicit individual prospects for major gifts.

Key Responsibilities

 Fundraising

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift prospects. Provide strategic leadership to Pacific Marine Mammal Center staff and others in designing and implementing Resource Development programs needed to sustain major gift support.  
  • Manage a portfolio of prospects with the potential of raising major gifts. Solicit and close gifts at all levels, with a focus on moving current low-to-mid level donors up to donors in the $1,000 - $10,000 range.  
  • Prepare written proposals, informational, and other materials needed to secure major gifts.
  • In consultation with the Vice President of Development, annually establish personal goals, objectives, and strategies for major gift fundraising, and regularly assess progress toward goals. 

Discovery

  • Create and follow a strategic plan designed to expand our donor pipeline, primarily through research related to individuals who have visited, made purchases through our catalogs, been camp families, or had other interactions. Additional prospects shall include donors to similar organizations, including environmental and conservation.
  • Proactively reach out to qualify leads through calls and emails, making 15 substantial contacts per week and an average of 1-2 visits per week. Solicit individual prospective donors, when appropriate, and qualify major gift prospects to proactively cultivate for additional future gifts.
  • Lead and create, in collaboration with Development staff and volunteers, strategic “discovery” activities including, but not limited, to targeted events for prospective donors. Activities for the portfolio will allow for prospect qualification and follow-up solicitation.
  • Serve as a qualification officer for new leads for major gift prospects (1,000+) and planned gifts from research, prospect tracking tools, and donor database.  Work in partnership with Vice President of Development to build relationships to close major gifts.
  • Work with the Vice President of Development to develop techniques to start new relationships and move them through the donor continuum to a gift conversation.
  • Professionally and clearly articulate Pacific Marine Mammal Center’s vision and funding priorities verbally and in writing to prospects and donors.
  • Responsible for prospect/donor call coordination and briefing materials associated with activities for potential major donors.
  • Responsible for core fundraising metrics including early prospect outreach, face-to-face visits, identification of new prospects, growth in cumulative giving, dollars raised, and donors secured.
  • Track and report fundraising metrics to supervisor.
  • Ensure proper stewardship and recognition of donors in portfolio.
  • Experience with Arreva (or equivalent donor database) preferred.

Attributes of a Successful Candidate

  • 5-8 years’ related experience and demonstrated success in donor identification, cultivation, and stewardship.
  • Documented success in personally implementing sophisticated, multi-year cultivation strategies that use a relationship-building and moves management approach leading to successful gift closure.
  • Ability to initiate and build relationships with prospective individual donors and interact via telephone and in-person.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, with a talent for building strong and productive relationships across constituencies.
  • Demonstrated success in organizing work, meeting strict deadlines, and setting priorities.
  • Self-motivation and discipline to regularly set and exceed work goals.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and networking skills with individuals and large groups.
  • Ability to communicate Pacific Marine Mammal Center’s priorities to an external audience.
  • Demonstrated analytical and strategic thinking capabilities.
  • Demonstrated experience using influence and motivational skills.
  • Creative, professional, and entrepreneurial spirit.

  • Ability to travel when necessary to engage and solicit prospects.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable working in donor/prospect computer data base systems.
  • Current, valid driver's license; use of a private vehicle; and valid automobile insurance.
