Balboa Island Museum & Historical Society seeks a collaborative and adaptive nonprofit leader with the experience and community connectivity to drive greater philanthropic support for and public awareness of the organization and its programs.
The Balboa Island Museum & Historical Society was founded in 2000 with a mission to preserve the Balboa Island heritage and its sense of community. The Museum is a special place where Islanders and visitors can gather and share Island memories. The Balboa Island Museum features rotating exhibits celebrating local history and collaborates with the community to curate special exhibits showcasing historic items on loan from Island residents. Currently led by the Board of Directors, the Museum is in a growth phase. The Museum is moving to a new location in November 2018 and is in the beginning phase of a capital campaign to support the expansion of its facility and program offerings. To support current and future organizational growth, the Board of Directors is seeking an Executive Director with these qualities:
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will be responsible for the leadership and management of the Museum’s resource development, operations, finances, and programs. The Executive Director will provide staff support to the Board of Directors and support the recruitment and engagement of new Board members. Working closely with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will contribute leadership and vision to promote the growth and long-term sustainability of the Museum. The Executive Director will be responsible for implementation of the Museum’s strategic plan and capital campaign plan, for the development and execution of an annual fundraising plan, for budgeting and fiscal oversight, and for core operations of the Museum, its retail store, and the overall organization. The Executive Director, in conjunction with the Board of Directors, will support the expansion of Museum exhibits in the new location. The Executive Director will represent the Museum in the community, develop community partnerships, and engage stakeholders to increase public awareness and further the Museum’s mission
Minimum position requirements include: Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Master’s degree preferred in business administration or public administration, with a focus on nonprofits or museum studies); 3+ years of progressive management experience in a museum sector or nonprofit organization, with proven leadership experience in one or more of the following areas: administration and management, fundraising, museum or program operations, or organizational development; proven success in fundraising; and knowledge of Balboa Island and surrounding communities, including familiarity with local businesses, city/county officials, and key community stakeholders.
This position is part-time (32 hours per week) exempt with seven paid holidays and seven days of paid time off per year. Salary range is $55,000-$65,000 with potential for future growth based upon demonstrated accomplishments.
