The Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach is a chartered member of the Boys & Girls Club of America, a nationwide organization composed of autonomous, community-based organizations that work at the local level to help young people of all backgrounds develop the qualities they need to become responsible citizens and leaders. Role and Responsibilities

 Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Director of Major Gifts will develop and implement strategies to increase revenue, strategic relationships, actively drive fundraising efforts from individual donors with a focus on major gifts ($5,000 and above) and build a culture of philanthropy as a pivotal part of the Club’s fundraising team.  This position will meet, solicit and make meaningful contacts with donors and prospective donors to understand their goals and priorities, assess their interest and capacity, and raise support for Club initiatives. The Director of Major Gifts must be a self-motivated professional with a commitment to the Club’s mission, a track record of advancing relationships, and broad knowledge of development principles.

He/she will be expected to direct and manage a core team of board and other volunteers focused on increasing individual giving. Individual responsibilities and accountability metrics to include but not be limited to:

  • Develop and maintain a personal pool of 100-150 annual giving prospects with the intent to cultivate, solicit and steward gifts at or above $5,000.
  • In coordination with the CEO, Chief Development Officer and volunteer core team, develop and implement cultivation and solicitation strategies, including conducting face-to-face visits in an effort designed to increase the annual renewal and upgrade of high-value loyalty donors.
  • Increase individual, family foundation and corporate giving.
  • Track progress and results utilizing MOVES Management in our Donor Perfect fundraising database.
  • Establish cooperative working relationships with Club leadership, board members, staff and the community to promote maximum engagement and giving in support of the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge on how to meet, solicit and make meaningful contact with donors and prospective donors to understand their goals and priorities. The ability to assess their interest and capacity.
  • Actively driving fundraising efforts from individual donors with a focus on major gifts ($5,000 and above) towards Club initiatives.


Bachelor’s Degree from accredited university or college. CFRE Preferred. Master’s Degree highly desirable.


Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible fundraising positions in a complex, non-profit environment. Thorough understanding of best practices and trends in individual giving and demonstrated experience in managing effective annual fundraising programs, as well as, ability to interact personally with donors and prospects. Must have a proven track record that demonstrates solid fundraising results and success in personal cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of annual gifts in the $5,000 and up range. Proven ability to engage with donors and an understanding of what it takes to expand their participation. Experience conducting data analysis to assess the efficacy of annual giving methods is required.

Fundraising experience within a comprehensive campaign in a sophisticated and complex environment.



  • Strong interpersonal skills, a collaborative working style and an enthusiasm for building bridges between and among key stakeholders.
  • Track record of raising funds at the $5,000 and above level.
  • Leadership skills to lead our board and volunteers in how to raise funds for the Club. 
  • Effective written communication skills necessary to write and edit letters, memos, reports, discussion documents, proposals and other solicitation materials. Excellent project management skills.
  • Problem solving skills and the ability to anticipate challenges and obstacles, along with the creativity and tenacity to implement solutions effectively.
  • Ability to link organizational objectives to annual and major gift program goals in an environment with quickly shifting priorities and high expectations.
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in standard office productivity software.
  • Practical knowledge of using Excel and fundraising software (i.e., Donor Perfect) for data analysis.
  • Must be able to work occasional evenings, weekends and early mornings. Will need to respond to after hour texts, emails and calls on occasion.

Highly Preferred

  • Knowledge of and established personal and/or business relationships within the local community.
  • Practical knowledge of current trends and best practices for raising funds through individuals, foundations and corporations.
  • Broad knowledge of tax laws that impact charitable giving, personal assets and estates.
  • Knowledge of the importance of linking annual giving programs to building a pipeline for major gifts.
  • Ability to provide leadership to Team members on methods for integration of annual giving, major and planned gifts activities.

The Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach has been serving the children and families of our community for over 65 years. The Club offers daily access to a broad range of programs in five core program areas (Character and Leadership Development; Education and Career Development; Health and Life Skills; The Arts; and Sports, Fitness and Recreation).
