Since 1969, Project Youth OCBF (Orange County Bar Foundation) has remained committed to its mission of keeping at-risk youth in school, healthy, and drug-free through education, counseling, mentoring, and family strengthening. Our agency is based in Santa Ana and was initially established as the philanthropic arm of the Orange County Bar Association. Due to the success and growth of our work supporting at-risk youth, in 1981 we became an independent 501c3 nonprofit agency. We are on the front lines, offering comprehensive one-stop services for youth and their families.  Our goal is to reach at-risk youth early and provide long-term solutions to the obstacles they face. 

Position Summary

The Director of Development, a newly created position, will report to the Executive Director and maintain responsibility for the fundraising program to provide the financial resources necessary to support the organization’s mission.  This individual will serve as a member of the organization’s senior management team and will help develop and implement plans to take the fundraising program to the next level of success. The Director of Development will oversee the duration of the organization’s efforts in a comprehensive campaign, as well as major and planned gifts, annual fund and development operations after the completion of the campaign. The Director of Development will develop and implement strategies that promote long-term sustainable growth and deepen the organization’s relationships with existing and new donors.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities for Campaign Management (through December 31, 2021)

*Project Youth OCBF retained the campaign consulting firm CCS Fundraising to create a campaign plan, materials and manage onsite for the first year of the campaign.  The campaign has raised more than 20% of its campaign goal.

  • Using the campaign plan already implemented, the Director of Development will manage the overall campaign plan, phases and day-to-day activities to keep activity on track
  • Manage Campaign Committee and Subcommittees (6), including:
  • Setting agendas for monthly Campaign Committee Meetings and assisting with creation of agendas for Subcommittees
  • Guiding fundraising strategy and priorities for volunteers
  • Briefing all solicitors and preparing prospect packets prior to solicitation meetings
  • Assisting at solicitation meetings whenever necessary
  • Conducting debriefing meetings following solicitation calls
  • Discussing and formulating next steps
  • Drive the organization and implementation of specific plans to engage in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of prospective donors
  • Develop and maintain prospect lists and tracking systems, matrices, and pipeline reports (both for overall donors and for specific committee activity), which would include:
  • Identifying new prospective donors
  • Assigning target request amounts
  • Conducting prospect research on all key prospects
  • Designing cultivation and solicitation strategies
  • Identifying potential solicitors
  • Serving as a clearing house for all prospect information
  • Keeping all information and reports current and updated
  • Interact on a regular basis with campaign leaders and volunteers regarding prospect assignments, background information and research, pre-solicitation briefings and debriefings, call reports, formulation of next steps, follow-up documentation, and thank-you letters
  • Participate in cultivation and request meetings, often with Board or Campaign Committee member (as appropriate)
  • Provide weekly/monthly reports to Executive Director, and committee leaders tracking campaign statistics, evaluating progress based on established benchmarks, recommending next steps, and adjusting when necessary

Prepare all general campaign correspondence


Primary Duties and Responsibilities for Development Department

  • Develop and implement a development plan for the organization, including plans for annual giving, and individual major and planned gifts
  • Partner with volunteers and/or Executive Director to identify and solicit annual gifts of $5,000 and higher
  • Manage relationships for a portfolio of prospective donors and funders
  • Work collaboratively with other staff and volunteers to cultivate and solicit prospective donors and funders
  • Establish and drive performance metrics
  • Oversee the comprehensive calendar of activities in support of development
  • After the Campaign, staff the Development Committee of the board, providing guidance and direction to their efforts
  • Create appropriate recognition for donors of all sizes
  • Ensure proper stewardship practices for the timely and accurate recording and acknowledgement of all gifts
  • Maintain ongoing and active networking with internal and external constituencies
  • Continue to build and maintain a planned giving program


Note – The agency has a full time Director of Events and Individual Giving and a consultant that manages all foundation and corporate support, grant writing as well as design work on marketing materials.


  • Bachelor’s degree required, graduate degree preferred
  • 5 years of fundraising experience and a proven record of successful cultivation and solicitation of gifts
  • Prior experience with campaigns and working in a Development Office, preferably for a social services or health-related agency
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of all areas of fundraising, with a particular emphasis on major gift acquisition
  • Proven track record in planning and achieving short- and long-term goals and creating a plan outlining activity
  • Exceptional interpersonal and influencing skills, tact, and diplomacy with the ability to develop and maintain cooperative and successful working relationships with volunteers, staff, and all donors; ability to serve as a team player and leader
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and creatively about engaging donors, and to develop plans of action and follow through
  • Ability to inspire and motivate volunteers and staff
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Sound judgment and superior problem-solving ability
  • Integrity and fiscal accountability
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Must be willing and available to work evenings and weekends per event-related scheduling
  • Experience working with donor management and data management systems



Salary Range:

Full-time position at 30-40 hours per week – flexible schedule and low stress user friendly work environment. Salary commensurate with experience; compensation package includes health (employee company paid medical / HMO), vacation and sick days, 403(b) retirement plan, plus more.
