Sterling Search Inc. has been exclusively retained to recruit for the new Chief Development Officer (CDO) for Catalina Island Medical Center (CIMC).

MISSION: To provide quality healthcare to each individual and improve the overall health of our community. CIMC’s vision is to be the destination for excellence in patient centered care and health enrichment.

Catalina Island Medical Center is the result of more than a century of evolving medical care on Santa Catalina Island. Although it is one of the smallest hospitals in the state, due to its unique island location it historically has provided many of the health services typically found only at larger facilities. It serves its patients through a truly integrated healthcare delivery system consisting of physician offices, an acute care hospital and skilled nursing services along with its extensive outpatient programs. In 2010, Catalina Island Medical Center began the transformation to electronic medical records, creating a state-of-the-art comprehensive healthcare information system. CIMC is serving a population of over 4,500 residents and 1 million visitors every year – more than four times the number it was built to serve almost 60 years ago.

Also, the impressing issue of the State of California mandating that all hospitals meet earthquake safety standards by the year 2030 has demanded a focus on their current building and its operation. In 2016 CIMC conducted a market needs assessment that identified a strategic imperative to improve services on the island and designated that the 1950s building as inadequate to provide the full range of services needed for a growing visitor population. In 2017 CIMC hired a fundraising campaign consulting company to conduct a feasibility study and recommended a campaign of $20 million to create a new medical center.

The new center has a dynamic design and will play not only an imperative role in the islands’ healthcare but also as a major hub for the community.  It will have private rooms, an operating room, infusion therapy, a fitness facility, digital mammography, and more – significantly enhancing care for the residents and visitors served.

With that, one of CIMC’s key priorities is to hire a Chief Development Officer who will collaborate with, and report directly to, the Catalina Island Medical Center Foundation (CIMCF) and the Chief Executive Officer. CIMCF has a contract with CIMC to provide CDO services to the organization.  Both organizations work closely together to raise fund for CIMC. The CDO will focus on strengthening CIMCF’s resources by establishing a broader and more diversified fund development program with an emphasis on leading a successful campaign as well as building a sustainable long-term philanthropy program. 

Ideally the CDO will live on the island. However, as it is anticipated that the donors span the coastal region of Los Angeles and Orange Counties, the position can also be based in either county, with the CDO spending at least 2 days a week on the island. A stipend will be provided for reasonable accommodations should the employee live on Catalina Island. 

This CDO role is a phenomenal opportunity to partner with a successful healthcare CEO and collaborate with the Board to build a successful fundraising program and complete a capital campaign for such a beloved and necessary island treasure.  

The Chief Development Officer will be responsible for increasing Catalina Island Medical Center’s development capacity through a strengthened culture of philanthropy.   The Chief Development Officer needs to possess intellectual horsepower, and have the natural ability to be persuasive, fair, accountable and self-driven. He/she will lead based upon a sense of core ethics of collaboration, self- improvement and the drive of excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate with the CEO, Board of Directors and staff to lead the organization’s development strategies and continue to chart the organization’s course in fund development.
  • Oversee the launch and execution, with the CEO & Board of Directors, of the $20 million campaign.
  • Create, manage and direct the funding/revenue base while focusing on a comprehensive fund development plan to enhance the short- and long-term diversified funding base.
  • Aid in the development and cultivation of a strong Board of Directors, together with the CEO and staff.
  • Work in concert with appropriate volunteer community leaders and professional staff to coordinate successful strategic and tactical plans.
  • Ensure that philanthropy and fund development are carried out in keeping with the organization’s values, mission, vision and plans.
  • Develop a balanced funding mix of donor sources and solicitation programs tailored to the needs of the organization that will enable it to attract, retain and motivate donors and fundraising volunteers.
  • Oversee performance measures, monitor results and help the CEO and Board of Directors evaluate the effectiveness of the organization’s fund development program.
  • Broaden and develop a robust major and planned giving programs.
  • Provide oversight of all of the organization’s fund development activities and monitor adequacy of such activities through coordination with the CEO, and appropriate committees.
  • Assist the Board of Directors to determine accountabilities for board members and fundraising volunteers and help evaluate performance.
  • Develop agendas for fund development meetings; develop an annual calendar to cover all crucial development issues in a timely fashion.
  • Partner with the CFO to assure sound fiscal operation of the development function including timely, accurate and comprehensive development of charitable contributions income and expense budgets, reporting, monitoring and implementation.
  • Manage development and writing of proposals and solicitation materials.
  • Assure design and maintenance of donor and prospect records, gift management systems, and informational reports.
  • Assure appropriate prospect research.
  • Assure design and implementation of acknowledgment, stewardship and recognition programs with feedback and necessary check off systems.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and laws, maintain accountability standards to donors, and ensure compliance with code of ethical principles and standards of professional conduct for fundraising executives.
  • Execute all other reasonable duties as assigned by the CEO.

 

We are seeking candidates offering the following qualifications:

  • Passion, imagination, vision, leadership, and integrity
  • Strong management experience
  • A demonstrated ability to plan and operate strategically, to build public support, to develop and strengthen fundraising infrastructure, to inspire staff, to develop strong working relationships with the Board of Directors and its Committees and to develop effective fundraising programs
  • Strong organizational skills and accountability toward goals
  • A minimum of seven years of fundraising experience with a preference for experience in capital campaigns
  • Significant experience in and a successful track record of major gift and annual fund fundraising
  • Self-driven and results oriented
  • Bachelor’s degree required
